DESCRIPTION:Susan Stronge is a Senior Curator in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. She specializes in the arts of the Sikh and Muslim courts of the Indian subcontinent\, and curated the award-winning 1999 exhibition\, “The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms.” Her books include Painting for the Mughal Emperor\, Tipu’s Tigers and Bejewelled Treasures: The Al Thani Collection. \nOn 23 April Susan will be taking us through the collection in a Webinar that is a part of Alliance francaise’s Indo Shared culture promoted by Tornos for its patrons and followers. This talk is being hosted by Alliance française  and open to Tornos patrons and guests.  \nDate & Time: Jan 28\, 2021 / 04:30 PM India. \n Zoom link : https://zoom.us/j/93214634781?pwd=MHkzSHgvTlF2VWdzU3RKR25mUDNlUT09&fbclid=IwAR1Oy-owHXuo4so68r0F6ay1eJbs4TRMyEoH8Q284h5kG-JE6dXPg8JAf6Q \nMeeting ID: 932 1463 4781Passcode: 0YcfzS  \nAbout the speaker – Dr Rosie Llewellyn-Jones\, MBE \nStudied Urdu and Hindi at the School of Oriental & African Studies\, University of London.  Awarded a First Class Honours degree in 1973 and completed her PhD there in 1980 which was subsequently published as A Fatal Friendship: the Nawabs\, the British and the City of Lucknow in 1985. \nRosie has written a number of books including Murshidabad\, Forgotten Capital of Bengal (with Dr Neeta Das): Portraits in Princely India (published by Marg) and on the Uprising of 1857.  She is the editor of Chowkidar\, the journal of the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia  (BACSA) published twice a year. \nHer biography of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah The Last King in India published in 2014 was a critical success in Britain and India. She has recently completed a book on Battlefield Lucknow for Harper Collins India to be published later this year and the final part of her trilogy on Claude Martin will be published as The Estate of Major General Claude Martin at Lucknow: an Indian Inventory next month. \nRosie visits the subcontinent as frequently as possible and was an invited speaker at a recent Jaipur Literature Festival.  She is part time archivist at the Royal Society for Asian Affairs and was a Council Member of the Royal Asiatic Society. She was awarded an MBE in 2015 for services to British India studies. \n

SUMMARY:Online Talk: Jean-Baptiste Gentil & Awadh
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE TALK by Prof.Dhir Sarangi of Centre for French & Francophone Studies\, JNU\, New Delhi.\n \nJean-Baptiste Gentil joined the court of Shuja-ud-Dula at Awadh\, becoming the French Resident here. He also helped set up a battalion of French mercenaries who served Shuja-ud-Daulah. The battalion was disbanded after his death. While serving at Oudh\, he purchased a large collection of objects of natural history\, weapons\, medals and manuscripts in many languages. When he returned to France he donated these collections to the royal library and museum. He also produced maps of the region and wrote on the history of the Moghul Empire. He was present at the battle of Buxar. He retired to France in 1778 and then died in Bagnols in 1799.\n \nThe Event will be presided by M. Emmanuel LEBRUN-DAMIENS (Counsellor for Cooperation & Cultural Affair)\, Embassy of France.\n \nThe Talk on the subject will be delivered by Prof.Dhir Sarangi of Centre for French & Francophone Studies\, JNU\, New Delhi.
